On the approx. 6 Km. long inner- and outer fjord there has since
1885 been sailed from Skælskør to surrounding islands. The
ferrysaling is now taking place from Stigsnæs Port and the only real
touristsailing from the port of Skælskør.
"Skjelskør 1" sailed from 1885-1894
"Skjelskør 2" sailed from 1894-1915
"Skjelskør 3" sailed from 1915-1962
The ferry was steampowered and is now sailing in Roskilde Fjord as a
ferryboat.
From 1962 to 1996 the touristsailing on Skælskør Fjord took place
with smaller touristboats.
They were without shelter (like the portsailing in Copenhagen) and
sailed only in the summerseason.
In 1995 a group of citizens, businessowners and local banks founded
a company: "Skælskør Boatferry smba.".
Here depositors could purchase shares. The company aimed to
establish a capital of a certain size, so they could order a
yardbuilt ship to sail the touristboat and boatferry from Skælskør
Harbour.
In 1996, a ferry was ordered at a shipyard in Jutland, which was
completed the same year and by the baptism was named "Skjelskør V"
(Roman capital "V" = 5). The boat can in the sommertime carry approx.
90 guests and in wintertime about 40 guests. The price of the boat,
was at that time approx. 2,5 million DKR. It´s 15,00 meters long and
the width is 4,50 meters. The draft is 1,70 meters. The engine on
board is a Perkins Saab providing 215 HK. Lifejackets are placed
under the seats.
The tourist- and boatferry has since been operated by the company
with a special connection to the touristoffice in the city, which
also provide the sale of tickets and booking of chartertrips.
Sailing are carried out by a voluntary unpaid crew of masters,
helpers (ship assistants) and galley staff (catering service). On an
ordinary trip the guests can buy beverages, ice and snacks. On
charter trips organizers can order food from outside, while the boat
is provided with a complete set of service of max. 50 guests.
"Skjelskør V" could not operate without public or private fondings.
